Where Emmerdale’s original Tate family are now – from tragic death to marrying on screen step-mum

When the Tate family were first introduced to Emmerdale in November 1989, viewers had no idea that they would become an integral part of the show’s rejuvination.

Introduced during the same period that the show was rebranded from Emmerdale Farm to just Emmerdale, the family brought a touch of drama – and plenty of money – to the Dales.

The family, headed by patriarch Frank Tate, consisted also of his son Chris, daughter Zoe and his wife Kim – the latter two introduced in December that same year.

And Frank was the soap’s first true villain, with a fiery, alcohol-fuelled temper and tendency towards spousal violence.

In fact, Frank’s mean streak was so violent that – in 1996 – he tried to murder Kim, but ended up killing her lookalike.

Kim is the only member of the original Tate family to remain in Emmerdale, here is where the other actors are now…

Frank Tate, played by Norman Bowler

Frank Tate was killed off in 1997, when the shock of Kim’s dramatic return caused him to suffer a fatal heart attack.

In pure femme fatale style, Kim watched on as her husband died – clutching his chest and wide-eyed at her return, having presumed her dead.

After leaving the soap, Norman Bowler spent some time in India doing charity work with his wife, Dianne.

Dianne died in 2012 and Norman now spends his time split between India and the UK.

Chris Tate, played by Peter Amory

Christopher ‘Chris’ Tate was the son of Frank and his first wife, Jean.

Playing into the ‘evil stepmum’ trope, there was certainly no love lost between him and Kim – to whom he swore revenge after finding out that she had watched his dad die and did nothing to save him.

But he was no match for scheming Kim, who left him hospitalised after hitting him on the head with a large paperweight.

In 2001, the character married his third wife, Charity Dingle, but after repeated affairs on her part he poisoned himself in order to frame her for his murder – Chris died in 2003.

Since leaving the soap, Peter Amory has kept himself largely to himself – with just a few minor roles in TV dramas.

He also married his on-screen stepmum after tying the knot with Kim Tate actress Claire King in 1994. They divorced 10 years later and are said to still be friends.

Zoe Tate, played by Leah Bracknell

Zoe Tate was Chris’ sister, Frank and Jean’s only daughter.

Her first major storyline was coming out as gay in 1993, a momentous occasion which marked the very first lesbian character to ever appear in a British soap.

Another of Zoe’s major storylines was her affair with Charity Dingle, her brother’s wife. However, Chris eventually forgave his sister after she was diagnosed with schizophrenia.

Zoe eventually disappeared in September 2005 and, upon her departure from the show, Leah Bracknell taught meditation and yoga.

She was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in October 2016 and died three years later.

Kim Tate, played by Claire King

On the soap, Kim was married to Frank and had an ongoing feud with Chris.

She left the show in 1999 and became a regular fixture on British TV after appearing in Bad Girls, Coronation Street, Strictly Come Dancing and Celebrity Big Brother.

Her big return to the Dales came in 2018, with Claire initially resuming the role for a guest stint before taking it up full time.

She if one of the show’s most iconic characters and has often been branded “the ultimate soap bitch”.

Off screen, Bradford-born Claire married Peter Amory, who played her stepson in Emmerdale, and reportedly now lives near Harrogate following their divorce in 2004.
