Vienna Open: Andy Murray beats Hubert Hurkacz to reach second round
Britain’s Andy Murray beat Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz in three sets to reach the second round of the Vienna Open.
Murray claimed the opening set 6-4 before Hurkacz drew level with a tie-break (8-6) win in the second.
The Briton broke his opponent in the third and went on to secure victory by taking the final set 6-3.
Murray’s win followed defeat for compatriot Dan Evans, who was beaten in straight sets by Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz.
Success for Murray was his first in three attempts this year against world number 10 Hurkacz.
The 34-year-old Scot lost to the 24-year-old in Cincinnati and Metz, both by the same 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 scoreline.
The former world number one will now face 18-year-old Alcaraz, who he beat in Indian Wells last month.
Alcaraz earlier denied Evans an all-British second-round tie with Murray.
Evans, 31, twice broke back to level in the first set before a costly service game – from a 40-15 lead – saw Alcaraz break again for the opener.
Evans bounced back with an early break to lead 3-1 in the second set, but lost five games in a row to go down 6-4 6-3.
Britain’s number one Cameron Norrie begins his tournament against Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics on Tuesday.
