Britain’s Hannah Russell held off the challenge of Russian Daria Pikalova to retain her S12 100m backstroke title at the Tokyo Paralympics.

Russell won in a time of one minute 8.44 seconds – 0.32 ahead of her fast-finishing rival.

The 25-year-old, competing in her third Games, took a break after winning two golds in Rio to deal with mental health issues.

But she has returned stronger to win Britain’s eighth gold of the Games.
