Leeds has a lot of fantastic fish and chip shops – but one has been praised as ‘one of the best in Yorkshire’ – and offers some other perks too.
It’s a place where you can tuck into delicious seafood, pick up a takeaway chippy tea or even enjoy fish and chips al fresco while you watch planes flying overhead.
The business is ranked number four on the list of best restaurants in the city according to TripAdvisor with 4.5 stars and bagged a Travellers Choice Award in 2021.
The company was founded by the Chadwick family in 1994 – but it was named after a famous Leeds businessman that put Yeadon on the map in the 1870s.
Billy Murgatroyd was the owner of Moorfield Mills where Murgatroyds now stands.
He was known for saying: “When I’m in London I’m called Sir, when I’m in Bradford it’s Mr. Murgatroyd, but when I’m in t’mill it’s ‘t’owd bugger’s back again!”
He didn’t doubt himself at all, asking: “Why settle for less than t’best?”
And when it comes to fish and chips, Murgatroyd’s is clearly determined to offer the best.
Customers have deemed their fare ‘the best ever’ and ‘fish and chips cooked to perfection’.
On TripAdvisor, one reviewer said: “We visited last week on Wednesday evening and have to say this was the best food ever and the staff were wonderful. This is the first time we have been and we can’t wait to go back. Our waitress (sorry didn’t get her name) was lovely, very friendly, welcoming & efficient. We can not fault anything at all. Thank you so much for everything.”

Another review said: “Just visited Murgatroyds and the meal was really really good. Our waitress Betty was friendly and very efficient.
“I had the prawn and calamari starter, it was superb.
“The main course fish and chips were cooked to perfection, this was the best fish I have had for ages. My wife finished with a treacle sponge, also very good. The food portions were quite generous and the prices are reasonable, so I would rate this meal as very good value for money.”
They added that the restaurant offered ‘incredible value’.
A third review said: “Recently got a takeaway whilst the new season potatoes were in. I personally wish these were available all day and do understand the reason for any complaints!”
A fourth added: “Once again visited Murgatroyds after the lockdown. As usual, I was not disappointed. The food and service were top-notch. I am really disappointed by the comments of customers who obviously don’t have any patience and expect everything for nothing.
“Murgatroyd’s gets my vote for one of the best fish restaurants in Yorkshire bar none. Five stars all the way.”
