Leeds United’s latest signing Daniel James will be ‘under pressure’ at an early stage of his Whites career, according to the journalists on the Blue, White and Yellow podcast.
“The pressure is now on Dan James,” Beren Cross told host, Conor McGilligan. “He can’t come in now and just sort of coast for a few months. I know (Marcelo) Bielsa’s not going to play him straight away but that’s proper money. We’re talking about a fraction below the club’s most expensive signing in its history.”
The comments came following a conversation on the price of the deal to bring James to Elland Road from Manchester United. Leeds paid a fee starting at £25m for the Welsh international, although it’s thought that add-ons could take the deal to £30m which would break the record fee of £27m paid to Valencia for Rodrigo.
Referencing Rodrigo, Cross went on to say that of the Spaniard: “As we’ve seen with Rodrigo in recent weeks and months, the pressure is there with these players with the price tag. James has got a bit of time on his side as he’s only 23 but Rodrigo at 30 should be delivering right now.”
The length of James’ contract was also mentioned, as the winger signed a five-year deal with The Whites.
Cross added: “At 23, with a five year deal, he’s going to want to create a career for himself and he’s arguably going to want to become a Leeds legend of sorts if he can really play to that price tag.”
When discussing the fee, it was also mentioned that similar fees had been paid for players such as Emiliano Buendia, Joe Willock and Danny Ings this summer, so although the price might seem high on the face of it, it was felt that this was a fair price in the market.
It was also mentioned that once Bielsa wants a player, it’s important to pay the fee required to bring them in, such are the specific requirements of the coach. As stated, Bielsa had taken a special shine to James as well, wanting him at the club for over two years.
“If it’s a player that Marcelo wants and that (Victor) Orta rates, then they’ve got to go and get him. It’s very, very rare for there to be a player that Bielsa has been this passionate about.”
James could be in line to make his debut for the club on Sunday as Leeds host Liverpool at Elland Road.
