Manchester United face prospect of losing key man ahead of opening day visit of Leeds United

Leeds United’s opening day opponents, Manchester United, may lose a key player ahead of the Premier League clash on 14 August.

The Daily Mirror have claimed midfielder Paul Pogba has turned down a new contract and could depart Old Trafford before the new Premier League campaign begins.

His current deal expires next year and the Red Devils risk losing him on a free transfer if a sale is not sanctioned.

The 28-year-old was reportedly offered a deal worth £350,000 a week, a significant improvement on his current contract.

However, with Paris Saint-Germain said to be lurking and willing to pay £45m, Pogba’s days at Manchester United may be numbered.

The doubts over the future of such an influential figure will be music to the ears of Leeds, who will recognise the threat posed by the talented midfielder despite his inconsistency.

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already seen his preparations hindered by the absences of players enjoying breaks after international duty.

Crucial figures such as England trio Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford were all missing from the squad announced for a pre-season training camp in Surrey.

Leeds, on the other hand, have been preparing with a squad close to full strength and will be hoping the advantage shows when they make the trip to Old Trafford.

Diego Llorente, Robin Koch, Liam Cooper, Mateusz Klich and Tyler Roberts have all returned after linking up with their countries at Euro 2020.

Kalvin Phillips is the only player who featured at the tournament to have not returned, after playing a crucial role in England’s run to the final.

Leeds will be keen to avoid a repeat of their last visit to Old Trafford, when they were on the receiving end of a humiliating 6-2 drubbing.

However, the Whites defence was considerably tightened for the visit of Solskjaer’s men to Elland Road in April and Leeds secured a point in a 0-0 draw.
