Scientists have suggested the number of Covid cases could fall significantly in November – even if the government’s ‘Plan B’ is not introduced.

Experts at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine have predicted that the number of infections will begin to fall rapidly in the lead up to Christmas after peaking in November.

Speaking to Sky News, epidemiologist Professor Paul Hunter said modelling suggests the UK is nearing ‘endemic equilibrium’.

He added once that point is reached “non-pharmaceutical interventions (social distancing etc.) stop having much of an effect.”

It comes as the health secretary Sajid Javid said he is anticipating families will be able to celebrate Christmas as normal this year.

Last year’s festivities were cancelled for many due to Covid restrictions over the winter.

But while the health secretary acknowledged the virus is “unpredictable” he said he believes “we’ll have a normal Christmas” in 2021.
