Leeds United’s first opponents Man United announce training camp squad missing 15 senior players

Leeds United’s opponents on the opening day of the Premier League season, Manchester United, have announced their squad for a pre-season training camp which does not include 15 senior players.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is working with depleted resources as he readies his squad for the visit of Leeds on 14 August and several key names will be absent from their camp in Surrey.

The Red Devils are travelling to Surrey ahead of a friendly against QPR but will be without some of their most crucial figures, such as Harry Maguire, Bruno Fernandes and Edinson Cavani.

Their disrupted preparation will be music to the ears of Leeds United, who are working with a squad fairly close to full strength.

Kalvin Phillips will enjoy a break after playing a key role in England’s Euro 2020 campaign and Diego Llorente may also have a delayed returning date after spending the tournament in Spain’s camp.

However, as many members of the Leeds squad did not leave for international duty or returned after early exits from Euro 2020, head coach Marcelo Bielsa will have plenty of options available.

Manchester United, on the other hand, have a lengthy list of absentees who may take time to be brought up to speed upon their return to Old Trafford.

Other players missing from their Surrey camp after summers on international duty are David de Gea, Diogo Dalot, Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw, Paul Pogba, Fred, Donny van de Beek and Marcus Rashford.

Dean Henderson and Phil Jones miss out through injury and Ivorian duo Eric Bailly and Amad Diallo begin their Olympics campaign on Sunday.

Jadon Sancho is expected to join from Borussia Dortmund soon but a deal is yet to be completed for the England international and he will not feature until the move is official.

Whereas Manchester United have already kicked off their pre-season campaign, Leeds are yet to play a friendly and do not have a fixture scheduled until 27 July, when they will visit Guiseley.

Bielsa will be relishing the prospect of being able to run the rule over a squad close to full strength, a luxury Solskjaer cannot enjoy.
