Leeds United transfers rumours: Bizarre Barca decision, January prediction, ‘concrete interest’

Leeds United will be looking to bounce back from the 3-0 loss against Liverpool when they travel to Newcastle this Friday.

Having picked up just two points from their opening four matches, the Whites currently sit just outside the relegation zone and some people have raised concerns over whether they can rectify a below-par start.

Despite being linked to a whole host of new players, Leeds enjoyed a relatively quiet summer window but did make one notable signing on deadline day as Daniel James joined for around £30m from Manchester United.

Although the window has now slammed shut, speculation continues to circulate on both incomings and outgoings at Elland Road and we have rounded up some of the latest news.

Agbonlahor tips Leeds for January transfer

Former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor has backed Leeds United to sign an experienced centre-back in January amid a potential defensive crisis.

Robin Koch has missed the last four weeks due to a pelvic problem, whilst Diego Llorente limped off in the defeat against Liverpool.

It has been confirmed that the appeal against Pascal Struijk’s red card has been rejected, with Liam Cooper the only senior option available and Agbonlahor believes they need to act quickly when the transfer window reopens.

Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: “It’s definitely something Leeds will have to look at in the January transfer window. Maybe bring in an experienced defender, an older one who can fill in for the odd two or three games. I can see it happening.

“It’s just one of those things. How many players have we seen retire early? Or have injury-hit careers. It’s just your body letting you down.”

Barcelona tried to sign Rodrigo

Leeds reportedly received ‘contact’ from Barcelona for Rodrigo as the Spanish side planned a late swoop to potentially replace Antoine Griezmann.

The 30-year-old joined the Whites last summer and has scored seven goals in 29 appearances but was taken off at half-time in Sunday’s loss in West Yorkshire.

Although he hasn’t started the season in the best possible way, The Athletic have reported that Barcelona were ready to make a loan offer to sign Rodrigo on deadline day.

The nature of the interest, among other reasons, made talks a non-starter after the Whites only brought in Rodrigo last summer for £27m from Valencia.

With just a few hours to go until the window was slammed shut, it would’ve been challenging for Bielsa to find a replacement and add to their already light squad.

‘Concrete interest’ in Lang

The Whites were linked with a move for Club Brugge’s Noa Lang but failed to acquire his services and opted to sign James instead.

Reports from the Belgian press had detailed the Premier League side wanting to take the winger, following his impressive start to life at the Pro League champions.

Football agent Bart Baving has confirmed that a number of clubs wanted to bring in Lang but didn’t confirm whether Leeds were one of them.

“Towards the end there was concrete interest from several competitions. As much as he likes to be at Club Brugge, you noticed he was getting more restless, which makes sense,” Baving told Het Laatste Nieuws.

“You saw that clubs were economical. We also heard amounts above €25m for Teun Koopmeiners. In the end, he went to Atalanta for €14m.

“With the amount Club Brugge had in mind for Noa, it had become difficult anyway. Add to that, Noa didn’t want to exchange this club for any team.”
