With the summer transfer window in its final two weeks, former Leeds United number one Paul Robinson has given his thoughts on the business he believes Victor Orta should complete before the deadline.
Thus far, Leeds have brought in several U23s, with the highly-rated trio of Lewis Bate, Amari Miller and Sean McGurk joining up with the PL2 Div 2 champions.
When it comes to the first-team, there has been less action than was anticipated. Jack Harrison’s permanent signing was completed after he had already spent three seasons on loan at Elland Road. Leeds also brought in Norwegian U21 international goalkeeper Kristoffer Klaesson to replace the departing Kiko Casilla. Junior Firpo – the left-back signed from Barcelona for around £13m – has been the main signing for the first-team but other than that no other deals have been completed.
This has raised some concerns for the former Whites man.
“I’m surprised at the lack of activity so far,” Robinson told Gambling.com. “I think they’ll bolster in the goalkeeping area. I know they’ve brought a young goalkeeper in to support (Illan) Meslier but I don’t think they’ve got the experienced and reliable number two as yet.”
The ex-Leeds and England goalkeeper seems clear on the idea that his old side need to bring in more cover and experience in that area but there is no indication at all that Marcelo Bielsa has tasked Orta with making such a signing.
One area of the squad that the club have been actively looking to improve is the midfield.
Leeds targeted Conor Gallagher and made a big play to sign the Chelsea youngster on loan, only to see him sign for Crystal Palace. They have subsequently been linked with Huddersfield Town’s Lewis O’Brien but a deal is stalled at the moment as the club’s disagree on the player’s valuation.
Robinson feels this is a deal they need to make happen.
“I think they have to get another midfielder in,” he continued. “They really struggled last year when Kalvin Phillips was missing. I think they could do with a central midfielder but one who can also do Phillips’ role when he can’t play.”
Finally, Robinson shared his view that Leeds should be in the market for a forward.
“I think they need another option up front other than (Patrick) Bamford. I don’t think Leeds are far away, but I would like to see them make two or three more signings before the end of the window.”
