Leeds United player ratings as Patrick Bamford shines up top in 2-2 Villarreal draw – Beren Cross

Leeds United (3-3-1-3)

1 Illan Meslier

Fairly blameless for each of the Villarreal goals. One strong save in the first half and another routine effort in the second from a long-range drive. Not quite conceded as a few as he would have liked across the pre-season as a whole. 7

5 Robin Koch

A quiet game from Koch positioned on the right of the back three, aside from the loudest possible start you could imagine as he turned into his own net inside 10 seconds. Of course, you can’t apportion blame for that cruel deflection. 6

21 Pascal Struijk

Another solid night’s work for Struijk, who ends up being the only man to even get close to Illan Meslier’s first-team minutes this summer. The defender has had plenty of pitch time this summer and looks well-placed to start at Old Trafford if Kalvin Phillips is not considered ready. 7

6 Liam Cooper (c)

Immediately took the team by the scruff of the neck in his first first-team outing of the summer. Vocal and organised the side throughout. Will be delighted to get 90 minutes in seven days before the big kick-off. Good in the air in both boxes, especially ahead of the second Leeds goal. 7

2 Luke Ayling

A quiet evening for Ayling playing in that advanced role he loves down the right flank. Has played a lot of this summer in central defence and that arguably showed in York. Never quite saw any real threat in the opposition’s third. 6

43 Mateusz Klich

Friendly or not, Klich will be delighted to get on the scoresheet as he comes into a new season under the most scrutiny he has seen at Leeds since that fateful period under Thomas Christiansen. Klich will know his position in the middle is under serious threat from Stuart Dallas. Had to play a touch deeper than he likes in this formation, but got around the pitch and provided an option. Cultured finish for his goal. A couple of late injury scares, but saw out the 90. 7

15 Stuart Dallas

Picked up the positions we like to see from him as the team attacks, but the fluency was lacking. Dallas’s passes were sometimes short and he got caught out of position a few times when he lost possession and allowed Villarreal to counter. Delivered some decent corners. 6

19 Rodrigo

Another quiet evening for the Spain international in the 45 minutes he was given. Looked isolated at periods in the ocean of space between Patrick Bamford and Klich. His final act, a delightful link-up and shot with Raphinha, was easy on the eye. 6

10 Raphinha

The Brazilian just hasn’t quite caught fire in pre-season, though very few do in dead-rubber friendlies. Enough zip and pop in his play to believe it should come together when the matches mean something, but was always one pass away from something happening tonight. 6

9 Patrick Bamford

Excellent performance as the lone striker from Bamford. Was at his pestering, harrying best in the first half as he nicked possession and proved a pressing nuisance for Villarreal. Even if he wasn’t stealing the ball himself, he was forcing errors from the opposition. Right place, right time for a simple goal every poacher loves. 8

Harrison earlier this week

22 Jack Harrison

Arguably outshone Raphinha on the night, but Harrison was hardly scintillating himself. Link-up play with Dallas and Klich was encouraging down the left channel. Some super deliveries into the box from wide left. 7

Kristoffer Klaesson

Cody Drameh

Liam McCarron

11 Tyler Roberts (on for Rodrigo h/t)

Roberts again seemed to be the man Marcelo Bielsa was bellowing at most, but this was decent enough from the Wales international. Good feet in tight spaces, but not always threading the passes or building the moves he needs to from that central, playmaking role. 7

23 Kalvin Phillips (on for Koch h/t)

Steady evening from Phillips without being able to shine as the right-sided centre-back. A few fouls. Starting on the bench again may cast doubt on his chances of starting next weekend. 6

17 Helder Costa (on for Raphinha 75min)

A late cameo from Costa which did not yield a great deal. N/A
