Leeds United player ratings as captain Kalvin Phillips and Jack Harrison finish Crewe defence – Beren Cross

Leeds United (4-1-4-1)

1 Illan Meslier

Virtually a spectator all evening. Did well to keep himself warm in the second half. 6

46 Jamie Shackleton

Needed plenty of direction from Marcelo Bielsa every time there was a stoppage in play during the first half. Didn’t always make the right choice when he had the ball in promising positions. Improved after the break and found himself in the box on plenty of occasions as he carried the ball deep into opposition territory. 6

14 Diego Llorente

A very steady 45 minutes to open his account for the season. Not called upon a lot, but dealt with what came his way in the air and on the deck. Playing a half looked pre-planned rather than an injury concern. 7

21 Pascal Struijk

Fronted up decently with Mikael Mandron’s physical approach. Really not asked to do a great deal. 7

3 Junior Firpo

Much better from the left-back who linked up nicely with Jack Harrison down the left flank, proving a threat on the underlap and overlap in the final third. Even struck the outside of the post at one stage. 7

23 Kalvin Phillips (c)

Far from a taxing night for the England international and first-time Leeds captain. Sprayed the ball around and protected when he needed to. Popped up with the goal when the team needed it. 7

17 Helder Costa

Another ineffectual performance from the winger, despite the quality of the opposition. A performance summed up by the drive inside from the right flank which had everyone on their feet before driving the ball halfway up the Norman Hunter Stand. 5

4 Adam Forshaw

Everything he would have wanted, apart from a goal, from his first start in nearly 700 days. Would have been thrilled to be back in front of 35,000-plus home supporters. Zipped around, carried the ball, completed passes and looked very sharp. 7

11 Tyler Roberts

The type of match he wants to grab by the scruff of the neck, but struggled with the tightly-packed Crewe defence. Rarely found himself creating or finishing chances. 6

Jack Harrison

22 Jack Harrison

Wasteful at times, but overall a dangerous performance from Harrison, who was by far the biggest problem for the visitors to deal with. Visibly frustrates himself with his deliveries at times. Deserved his goals. 8

19 Rodrigo

Not quite clicking for the Spaniard in the opening weeks of this season. Had chances in and around the box, but well blocked by the visitors. Kept asking for the ball and didn’t let his head drop. 5

13 Kristoffer Klaesson

2 Luke Ayling (on for Llorente h/t)

Had even less to do than his team-mates who defended for the full 90 minutes. 6

9 Patrick Bamford (on for Rodrigo 69min)

Offered some more verve and running in behind and proved a menace as Crewe legs tired. 7

15 Stuart Dallas

35 Charlie Cresswell

38 Crysencio Summerville

43 Mateusz Klich (on for Forshaw 61min)

Ticked over in his half an hour. Third-man runs were noticeably better than what the team had managed in the first half. 6
