Leeds United news with Patrick Bamford in line to make his England debut

Here are your Leeds United evening headlines on Thursday, September 2.

Patrick Bamford in line to make his Three Lions debut

Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford could make his Three Lions debut this evening.

His fine form for Marcelo Bielsa’s side has seen Gareth Southgate call upon him for England’s World Cup qualifiers against Hungary, Andorra and Poland.

The 27-year-old is expected to play a part in at least one of those fixtures, the first of those against second-placed Hungary.

Marco Rossi’s side were one of the surprise packages at Euro2020, despite not making it out of the group of death.

Hungary were defeated by Portugal in the opening game of the tournament but held France and Germany to a draw in their remaining Group F fixtures.

Their impressive performances weren’t enough to see them progress through to the next round of the competition but will prove a stern test for Southgate’s side this evening.

Leeds midfielder Kalvin Phillips could also be involved in some capacity tonight.

Patrick Bamford’s goal celebration explained

Leeds United forward Bamford has explained the reasoning behind his lightning bolt goal celebration.

The 27-year-old makes a lightning bolt gesture after almost every goal and his scintillating form since Leeds returned to the Premier League has enabled him to make the symbol with his hands frequently.

His form has led to his first ever call-up to the England senior team and he will be hoping to use the celebration in an England shirt before returning to West Yorkshire.

Speaking on the England national team’s official YouTube channel, he said: “The Z celebration is actually a lightning bolt.

“It’s supposed to be bolt for planet, so it’s kind of raising awareness for climate change and obviously there’s a lot to be done so it’s trying to help everyone learn about that.

“I got involved with that, started learning more about it and then realised that I never really had an iconic celebration or a same one I did.”

Gary Neville takes aim at Leeds

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has taken a swipe at Leeds United, claiming they will always leak goals at Old Trafford.

Leeds have made two visits to Manchester United since returning to the Premier League, losing 6-2 on the first trip last December before being on the receiving end of a 5-1 drubbing last month.

The Whites did, however, hold Manchester United to a 0-0 draw back in April when Kalvin Phillips managed to keep the influential Bruno Fernandes quiet.

Neville, speaking on the Webby & O’Neill YouTube channel, said: “Forget Leeds. Honestly, forget Leeds.

“This Manchester United team are perfect for Leeds. I did the game last year where Leeds played well.

“But they got beat, 6-2 was it? Leeds will always concede five or six out here with the way they play. I mean we will rip them to shreds.

“Forget them. I love watching them, by the way. But we are perfect for them.”
