Leeds United news as Simon Jordan hits out amid Raphinha Fifa ban, ‘£100m’ claim

The latest Leeds United evening headlines on Wednesday, September 9.

Jordan slams Fifa

talkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan has backed Premier League clubs to overturn the FIFA sanction that was placed on their players.

The ban comes after Premier League clubs had collectively agreed not to release their players to play the fixtures in the red-listed countries, meaning that Brazil were left light for their World Cup Qualifiers.

In response to the decision the Premier League club’s made, the Brazilian governing body asked FIFA to impose a five-day ban on the players who were initially meant to feature over the international break.

And the talkSPORT pundit believes that the Premier League clubs affected, which includes Leeds United due to Raphinha’s ban, will challenge FIFA’s decision over the coming days.

“I don’t see how FIFA are going to be able to do very much,” said Jordan. “The whole thing is laughable, they’ve made an absolute horlicks of the situation between Brazil and Argentina.

“I expect the Premier League to push back very robustly because if they have anything about them they’ll be saying ‘what would have been the point in releasing the players if you were going to quarantine them for 14 days, they couldn’t have played’.”

Liverpool stars ruled out

For Leeds and Marcelo Bielsa it has big ramifications for this weekend’s game against Liverpool. The Whites will be without winger Raphinha, whilst Liverpool will be without Alisson Becker, Fabinho and Roberto Firmino for the trip.

Firmino, however, was expected to miss the clash due to a hamstring injury picked up against Chelsea just before the international break.

Alisson’s absence means that Jurgen Klopp may have to call on youngster Caoimhin Kelleher to replace Adrian for the fixture on Sunday. While the likes of Jordan Henderson, Thiago and Harvey Elliott could form a make-shift midfield partnership in the absence of Fabinho.

Leeds expected to break £100m wage bill

Leeds are expected to break through the £100m wage bill barrier this summer according to Football Insider after plenty of new signings arriving at Elland Road over the past twelve months.

Last summer the Whites signed club-record signing Rodrigo from Valencia, Diego Llorente from Real Sociedad and in more recent times have added Dan James to their ranks.

The club have also tied Patrick Bamford down to a new deal following his 17-goal haul in his first Premier League season with Leeds. Leeds’ wage bill for the year ending July 2020 was roughly £78m.
