Here are your Leeds United evening headlines for Tuesday, August 17.
First glimpse at Elland Road pitch
Ahead of Leeds United’s first home match of the season, fresh pictures of the Elland Road surface have emerged online.
For the first time in 20 years, the Whites went deep into the foundations at the stadium and started with the pitch from scratch over the summer.
The problems at Elland Road in 2020/21 were well documented with the original surface growing bobbly and rutted before the replacement tore up, making players slip until the weather dried up.
However, now, ahead of their first home Premier League match, new pictures of the surface have been posted, via the chair of the Leeds United Foundation.
Leeds tipped for Saint-Maximin deal
Former Liverpool striker, now pundit, Stan Collymore has tipped Leeds United to sign Newcastle talisman Allan Saint-Maximin.
Collymore has been impressed by what he’s seen from Saint-Maximin and believes other “upwardly mobile” clubs, like Leeds, should take a look at the 24-year-old.
The Frenchman was impressive for the Magpies in their defeat to West Ham on the opening day of the season, showing great footwork and delivery to pick out Callum Wilson for Newcastle’s opener.
The former Nottingham Forest striker also name drops Newcastle’s opponents last weekend as a possible destination for Saint-Maximin.
Andrea Pirlo gives Phillips verdict
Kalvin Phillips has been dubbed the ‘Yorkshire Pirlo’ ever since the early days of Marcelo Bielsa’s tenure at Leeds United.
Before the arrival of the Argentine coach, Phillips had been thought of as a box-to-box midfielder and had shown his ability to score goals in the 17/18 season as he often played as a more attacking midfielder and finishing the season with seven Championship goals.
It all changed under Bielsa though, as Phillips was repositioned as a defensive midfielder. His physicality was perfect for the role and his ability to spray passes from deep positions is what saw him given his aforementioned nickname, which has stuck with him ever since, even going global as Phillips played every game in England’s run to the final of the belated Euro 2020 tournament.
Now he’s even got Andrea Pirlo talking about him, in an interview with The Athletic.
