Here are the latest Leeds United morning headlines on Monday, September 6.
‘I feel for Bamford’ – Sutton on striker’s England debut
Patrick Bamford made his long awaited England debut yesterday as the national team defeated Andorra 4-0 at Wembley.
Gareth Southgate made a host of changes to his side though, meaning players like Mason Mount, Jack Grealish, Raheem Sterling were all on the bench and as such Bamford didn’t get the kind of service he’d have liked and was substituted just after the hour mark with the score at 1-0.
Writing in his Daily Mail column, Sutton said: “I feel for Patrick Bamford. He waited a long time for this England bow. Too long, really, because I don’t think he should have waited until he turned 28 years old for this first cap.
“In the end, Bamford’s Three Lions debut will go down as being fairly underwhelming. You might tell me he should have done better, given he was facing Andorra, the nation ranked 156th in the world and whose population you could squeeze inside Wembley Stadium.
“But it isn’t easy for a striker when you’re facing a side like this. Bamford didn’t have a great deal of space to work with. He likes to peel behind centre halves for Leeds United but there was no chance of that against this Andorra team who, let’s be honest, showed zero intent in pushing up. “
England added three more goals after Bamford’s substitution as the introduction of Grealish and Mount gave the side much needed attacking thrust.
Fans react to Daniel James Wales performance
Wales defeated Belarus 3-2 on Sunday afternoon, thanks to a last minute Gareth Bale winner which sealed a hat-trick for the Real Madrid man.
It was Daniel James’ assist for the winner that had Whites fans talking on Twitter though, as the new Leeds signing clipped the ball to Bale to finish inside a packed penalty area.
@JohnsonAkiel tweeted: “The ball from Dan James to find Gareth bale is very impressive had to dig that one out.”
Meanwhile one Manchester United fan said: “Dan James becomes a baller while playing for Wales. I think he will also do well for Leeds. Maybe he couldn’t cope with the pressure of playing for #mufc.”
Selection headaches for Klopp
Leeds face Liverpool at Elland Road in the first match following the international break, with both sides possibly losing all Brazilian international call ups from the game due to FIFA bans.
Jurgen Klopp may now be down one of his backup options as well after Takumi Minamino left international duty with an injury.
Regardless of any bans, Firmino may be missing for the Elland Road clash due to an injury of his own but Klopp should still be able to call on Diogo Jota, Sadio Mane and Mohommed Salah as his forwards.
