Leeds and Newcastle United supports have united on Twitter in an effort to commemorate the late Gary Speed ahead of their clash at St James’ Park on Friday.
September 8th would have been Speed’s 52nd birthday, and as Newcastle and Leeds both paid tribute to their former player, fans suggested the idea of both sets of supporters turning on their flashlights in the eleventh minute to pay tribute to Speed – with eleven being the number he donned during his time on Tyneside.
Speed played for a whole host of clubs during his career including Leeds, Everton and Newcastle and his birthday has sparked out an outpour of emotion from all those who watched him play or knew him personally.
And ahead of the fixture, fans have suggested ways in which they can remember Speed, who tragically took his own life in November 2011.
In reply to Newcastle’s Birthday post for Speed one fan account replied with;
“We play Leeds next week. How about both sets of fans light the stadium up on 11 minutes to remember Gary. “
