Leeds’ Gabby Logan has stepped in after a Tory MP’s messages suggesting that Marcus Rashford should have spent more time “perfecting his game” than “playing politics” were revealed.
A message leaked online from Conservative MP Natalie Elphicke who shared the message on WhatsApp to fellow MPs after the England star missed a penalty in the Euro 2020 final on Sunday night.
In the shootout against Italy, Marcus Rashford, Jordan Sancho and Bukayo Saka missed their penalty shots.
Throughout the pandemic, Rashford forced the Prime Minister into a U-turn and persuaded the government to provide free school meals to vulnerable school kids during the holidays.
In the private messages, Natalie Elphicke said: “They lost – would it be ungenerous to suggest Rashford should have spent more time perfecting his game and less time playing politics.”
In support of Rashford, Gabby who is a broadcaster from Leeds and a former gymnast, said: “Would it be ungenerous to suggest if the government did more to condemn racism and looked deeper into the reasons why we need to feed our poor with food banks in spite of being the 6th richest nation in the world then we might not need footballers with a conscience to intervene?”
The Dover MP apologised after the message was reported by GB News.
She tweeted: “I applaud the England team who gave their all in Euro 2020.
“Last night I shared the frustration and heartbreak of millions of other England fans.
“I regret messaging privately a rash reaction about Marcus Rashford’s missed penalty and apologise to him for any suggestion that he is not fully focused on his football.
“Onwards to the World Cup and I look forward to Marcus Rashford’s contribution at that time.”
