Jamie Carragher sends message to Sean McGurk after Leeds United U23s heroics

Leeds United Under 23s kicked off their Premier League 2 Division One season in comfortable fashion after securing a 3-1 success at Crystal Palace on Monday night.

After winning promotion to the highest level of domestic academy football last term, the Whites produced a clinical performance at Selhurst Park.

The display of one particular Leeds youngster caught the eye as Sean McGurk made his debut and marked it with a goal.

Key investment has gone into the squad over the summer, with Amari Miller, Lewis Bate and McGurk joining the club and all made an impact in the win over the Eagles.

McGurk made the switch from Wigan Athletic in June to team up with former Lactic Joe Geldhart at the Whites.

Having come on as a substitute at half-time, the 18-year-old was instantly involved and capped up off a fine first appearance with a well-taken finish to seal all three points.

It was a brilliant start to life as a Leeds player for McGurk, and he took to Instagram to share his thoughts on the win.

A number of Whites stars and former Liverpool great Jamie Carragher were quick to heap praise on the attacking midfielder in the comments on the post.

Carragher’s son James played with McGurk at Wigan and are both from Merseyside. Carragher was clearly impressed, replying with two raising hand emojis.

McGurk looks as if he could be another shrewd addition to the Leeds set-up as they look to compete with the best academy systems this season, including Manchester City and Chelsea.

Crysencio Summerville and Liam McCarron were also on the scoresheet in south London and Mark Jackson’s side are in back in action against Tottenham Hotspur next Monday.
