Gogglebox wins NTA award and fans lose it over speech – but viewers think Philip Schofield reacted with ‘rude word’

Gogglebox fans were overjoyed as the TV show bagged the award for Best Factual TV Show at the National Television Awards.

The Channel 4 programme came out on top at the NTAs this evening (Thursday) and the show’s stars delivered a brilliant speech as they collected their award.

The victory wasn’t without its controversy though, as many took to Twitter to complain that the award should have gone to the documentary about the late Caroline Flack.

After giving a somewhat rambunctious speech as well where different members of the cast took it in turns to give their thanks, the camera panned to presenter Philip Schofield who many felt gave a ‘disapproving look’.

Some viewers seemed to think the This Morning star had mouthed the words ‘w***ered’ to the camera while the acceptance speech was going on.

After the victory was announced the congratulations came flooding in on Twitter, with one fan posting: “Well deserved – one of the best shows on TV.”

Another fan posted: “Congratulations on your well deserved NTA. Julie you look stunning and what a great acceptance speech. You were as entertaining as ever. Well done everyone.”

Another posted: “well deserved and congratulations all of you. Lovely speech Julie. Loved your dress you looked great (and Tom). You all looked good.”

One fan added: “Congrats to all gogglebox people well deserved best show on telly by far!!! also best speech of the night 100%”

It appeared that not everyone in attendance was too pleased for the group though, as many felt that Philip Schofield gave a ‘disapproving look’ after they gave their speech.

A few people were in agreement that Philip mouthed the word ‘w***ered’ to the camera after it panned to him.

One person posted on Twitter: “Disapproving look from Schofield when the Gogglebox family was on …. What’s that about.”

There was also some eyebrows raised at Gogglebox winning the Factual award over the documentary about the late Caroline Flack, with one person posting: “Why would you vote gogglebox over Caroline Flack.”

Another said: “I love #Gogglebox & watch it every week & usually I’m happy when it wins the Factual award at the #NTAs but I think the Caroline Flack documentary should have won this year. That was such an important documentary and really showed the impact press intrusion can have on mental health”

Philip Schofield also had a share of the spotlight later on, picking up an NTA for ITV’s This Morning.
