Garforth fire: What happened at Barley Hill Road Park as black smoke fills air

A huge fire at a yard in Garforth sent a plume of black smoke billowing over the town tonight (Thurs).

The blaze took hold at a yard behind Garforth Used Car Sales, in Wakefield Road, when tyres, trees, debris and a vehicle all caught fire.

West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service dispatched two fire engines and two other appliances to the scene as worried onlookers gathered in the playing fields to watch the drama unfold.

Dramatic video captured the fire as it sent black smoke billowing over the bowling club and across Garforth.

But firefighters were quickly on hand to bring it under control.

John Littler, who owns the yard behind Garforth Used Car Sales, said they have had ‘lots of trouble with kids lighting fires and setting fireworks off’ in the past.
